The idea of Minoa Palace Chamber Music Festival first emerged during the summer of 2011 in Crete
In a discussion with my teacher Georgios Demertzis, the founder and 1st violinist of the New Hellenic Quartet, we realized we had a mutual inspiration; that of our true love for the great classical music. On the other hand, Crete as a crossroad of cultures, a destination of unique, natural beauty and vast history and tradition, has always radiated energy and inspiration. Minoa Palace Resort would become the most fertile ground for the idea to come to life.
The first concert took place in September 2012 in the 'Imperial' hall of the hotel, were Vassilis Varvaresos, George Demertzis and Angelos Liakakis, the original members that support the festival until today, first performed. Since then, Minoa Palace Resort, as the resident venue, has been a center of art for Western Crete. Young, talented and ambitious artists meet here every year and inspire local and international audiences with their creative power and inspiration.
Dear friends,
It is with great joy and deep emotion that I welcome you to the 14th Chania Chamber Music Festival. Every summer, the Festival offers all of us an opportunity to come together: a meeting of people, ideas and cultures, and, above all, a meeting of music with its audience. It is a celebration born out of the belief that music possesses the unique power to create meaningful bonds: between performers, between creators from different eras, and also between the people who share the experience of listening.
Over the course of its fourteen-year journey, the Festival has evolved into an institution that goes beyond the confines of a series of concerts. It has become a place of creative dialogue, where history converses with contemporary expression, and artistic excellence with human communication. This very idea also lies at the heart of this year’s Festival, entitled “Dialogues Through Time.”
Time in music is never a straight line, but rather an unceasing conversation. Every great composer enters into dialogue with those who came before and, at the same time, opens new paths for those who will follow. Through this continuous exchange, classical music manages to remain timeless, to move us, and to speak to every era in an ever-new way.
This year’s programme highlights precisely this dynamic. The incomparable allure of the Classical and Romantic worlds of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Weber, Liszt and Brahms coexists with the innovative creations of the 20th and 21st centuries by Enescu, Bartók, Kodály, Medtner, Martinů, Poulenc, Shostakovich, Skalkottas and Mustonen. This is not simply a succession of historical periods, but a conscious effort to highlight the bridges that connect different aesthetics, different languages and different eras of musical creation.
It is a great honor for the Festival to host once again this year some of the most important musicians on the international scene. Artists who have forged distinguished careers in the world’s greatest concert halls come together in Chania with cherished friends of the Festival and new collaborators, creating unique combinations. Their presence is not only a guarantee of the highest artistic standards; it is also tangible proof of the trust that the Festival has earned over the years.
At the same time, we remain faithful to our deep conviction that music acquires even greater power when it is connected to the place that hosts it. The concerts at the Minoa Palace Resort in Platanias, the Festival’s presence in Heraklion, and its now-established conclusion at the uniquely beautiful Ancient Theatre of Aptera, through the co-organisation with the Crete Festival and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, transform every musical evening into an experience in which art enters into dialogue with history, the natural landscape and the cultural heritage of Crete. In addition to the eight evenings of music, we are delighted to host a lecture related to the Festival’s theme by the influential music producer and composer Markos Moisidis. This year, for the first time, the Festival also “reveals” its social dimension and, through outreach activities, aspires to reach members of our community who are less fortunate and unable to come to us. Thus, with the support of the Athens State Orchestra, we go to them, offering a few moments of joy.
No event, however, can exist without the support of the people who believe in it. I would like to express my warmest thanks to the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Crete, the Municipalities of Chania, Platanias and Heraklion, Alpha Bank, our sponsors and supporters, as well as all our collaborators who work quietly but with dedication, ensuring that every detail of this Festival serves our common goal.
Above all, however, I thank you, the Festival’s audience. Your continued presence throughout all these years is the greatest confirmation that music continues, as ever, to move and inspire us and to create communities of people who seek quality and a meaningful artistic experience. Every moment of this shared emotion forms part of the Festival’s history.
I therefore invite you, once again this year, to travel this musical journey together, discovering that, despite different eras, different customs and different aesthetics, music continues to express the same profound human needs: the search for beauty, communication, memory, hope and creativity.
Welcome to the 14th Chania Chamber Music Festival.
George Mathioulakis
